Week 9 9/25/2011 D League Final Regular Season News

The final games of Season 1 wrapped up with the usual great performances from individuals and team play.  Sundays are for lounging but not when you are in the middle of a fight for playoff positioning.  With great match ups from top top to bottom, this past Sunday was filled with fireworks and buzzer beaters.  This is the summary of the day:

Avengers vs Code Green

Avengers and Code Green were fighting for the 7 spot.  Code Green riding high from a win over Primetime came in the game missing key players.  Avengers smelled blood and wanted to end the season strong.  Avengers came out firing early, an Avengers signature, with Chris and David leading the charge.  Code Green held on early with Darrel and Justin E. scrapping control of the boards and chipping in with buckets down the stretch.  Gino and Paolo for the Avengers stepped on the gas in the fourth quarter but Code Green's, AJ, didn't go down without a fight.  Avengers went on a run and never looked back.  Congratulations to both teams for making it to the playoffs!

Avengers 49      Chris M. 15 pts, 5 rb, 1 blk
Cde Grn  39      Darrel J. 11 pts and 4 rb

Bula vs Primetime
As you can probably guess this game had lots of "fireworks" and "drama"!  Bula wanted to make a statement to the whole league that they were the one's to beat and Primetime wanted to remind "everyone" that if you want to be Champs you have to beat the Champs!  Buckets after buckets, both teams were making incredible shots from everywhere.  Primetime's Alex and Colin got it started with Marlowe controlling the tempo on defense and offense.  Bula's VJ is looking better with every game and Vince looked like a blur on both ends of the court.  Bula pushed out to a double digit lead in the second half of the game but Primetime turned up the pressure and kept the game close.  Pot and Edwin for Bula helped to seal the game with timely plays and three pointers.  Congratulations to both teams for making it to the playoffs!

Bula  66               Vince 15 pts, 8 rb,  3 ast, 4 stls
Primtime 57          Alex M. 22 pts, 6 rb, 1 blck

Spartans vs Elite
Speed, gutsy, and ballsy was the theme of this game.  Spartans was looking to reestablish their position in the standings and Elite was just looking to put a pounding on a team to show that they should not be overlooked!  Spartans got off early with Alonzo and Masato getting out on the break for easy buckets.  Elite's Chris and Nikole answered back with easy buckets of their own and controlled the boards early in the game.  Team Captains Bong and Drexel for the Spartans made big plays to help get the Spartans a double digit lead in the second half but John and Xyrus went on a flurry to put Elite in striking distance.  Spartans KK, Nav and Marlon proved to be the X Factor in the game to pull out the win.  Congratulations to both teams for making it the playoffs!

Elite 56              John T. 20 prs, 4 rb, 2 ast, 2 stl
Spartans 69       Alonzo R. 17 prs, 8 rbnds, 3 stl

 ATR vs Dragons
This is the Game of the Week Folks!  First of all it was a great match!  Two of the top teams battling it out for supremacy.  ATR was missing William and Allen still managed to control the game early with Deejay and Christian returning from a short hiatus with solid team play on both defense and offense.  The Dragons was also missing a key player, Daryll, and they struggled to find the basket in the first half.  Joey,  the league leading scorer could not find his rhythm but Rob and Hervin carried the offensive load to keep the game close.   ATR had a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter but the dragons slowly chipped away at the lead with Vince making key plays and Joey hitting some key shots to tie the game.  With seconds left and a tied ball game, Hervin shot a long three and hit the front of the rim but Rob tipped in the winning points to get the win for the Dragons!  What a game!  Congratulations to both teams for a fabulous season and we are looking forward to similar performances from both teams in the playoffs!

Dragons 35   Rob C. 13 pts, 6 rb, 2 ast, 3 stl
ATR 34        Jun 10 pts, 8 rbnds

See you all next Sunday for the Playoffs!

Week 4 September 21, 2011 Asian 35+ Division News

Wednesday night basketball at Up 2 Speed Sports never fails to deliver.  Great games, incredible plays, and outstanding performances.  There is one undefeated team and one winless team that came out of Week 4.  Game Summary:

Joyful Smile vs Legends

Team Captain Edgar Espanola is back and tried to get his team off to a good start against the tough Legends team.  Joel and Dindo for the Legends had another thing in mind and welcomed Edgar back with a flurry of great finishes at the basket and stingy defense.  Joyful Smile's Rich and Kit were firing away at the basket making key buckets in the second half but Kobe made some key plays to slow down the Joyful Smile run.  Dindo hit a tough three pointer to seal the victory for the Legends... awesome game from both of these teams!

Joyful Smile 49   Edgar E. 13 pts and 7 rb
Legends 56    Joel 15 pts and 5 rb

Nimisis vs Code Black

When you have two fast teams on the same court you can expect exciting plays.   Nimisis coming off of their first win last week wanted to continue their winning ways against the hungry Code Black who have not won a game this season.  Nimisis came out firing away and got out early to take the lead with Rodell in the drivers seat.  Code Black kept the game close with Warren and Mark setting up Tony for open threes and Nik eating up all the rebounds.  With both teams seeking control of the game the pace got faster and more physical down the stretch. Code Black had a 1 point lead with seconds left in the game until Jonathan hit a tough three with 4 seconds left in the game.  Code Black was unable to execute in the remaining seconds of the game.  This is the game of the week!  Congratulations to Nimisis for a great win!

Nimisis  51   Rydell M. 15 pts, 9 rb, 3 stl, 2 blk and 3 stls
Code Black  49  Tony S. 19 pts and 6 rb

Bula vs NoyP-Forex

What a match up!  Bula came into the game with a 3-0 record and NoyP-Forex wanted to be the ones to give them their first loss of the season.  Needless to say NoyP-Forex has the balls and talent to do it.  Bula's size was a factor in the first half of the game.  The twin towers Lito and Sam controlled the boards and scored easily in the paint.  Fred and Mike for NoyP-Forex put up a flurry of points on the board to keep the game manageable with Mike going "Reggie Miller" from beyond the arc.  The game was close in the second half but the second unit for Bula prove to be the key to their win.  Bula's Robert made key buckets to hold off NoyP-Forex's run to get their fourth win of the season and still undefeated! This is a must see game!

Bula   48  Lito G. 17 pts and 11 rb
NoyP-Forex   44  Mike V. 18 pts, 4 rb, 6 threes

9/18/2011 Week 8 D League News

This Weekend was filled with great match ups and surprises.  With this weekends results the Top 8 Teams are set.  Here are the results of this weekend:

Avengers vs Elite
The game started out even with both teams trying to establish their tempo.  The Avengers came out firing with Chris Mallad finishing most of the plays in the first half for the Avengers.  Elite slowed the pace down with Ban Flores on the right high post setting up his teammates for easy buckets.  Gino, David and Darren for the Avengers picked up the pace on defense and tried to push the ball down every chance they got.  But Elite answered back with great passing and Donald Galang's timely threes.  Chris, John and Nik swallowed up key rebounds down the stretch to lead Elite to their fourth victory of the season.

Avengers 29      Chris M. 12 pts, 5 rbnds, 1 blk
Elite 43              Donald 12 pts, 2 rbnds, 3 threes

Bula vs SF Warriors
Fast and Furious is the best way to describe this game.  Bula's VJ Santos is back healthy and showed why he is one of the elite athletes in the league and Jeffrey Dacanay showed us why he is one of the most exciting players to watch out for.  It was a blur of points for all four quarters.  Jeffrey Dacanay and Vhenoc Martin duo had their best game of the season doing everything they could to get there team a win: score, rebound, steal, and dish out assists.  Julian Tinio and VJ Santos made sure that the game did not get out of control with timely plays and exciting scoring to stop their four game slide and put them back in the win column.

Bula  61                 Vj S. 10 pts, 3 rbnds,  3 ast
SF Warriors 55     Jeffrey D. 14 pts, 2 stls, 3 ast

Dragons vs Spartans
Both teams were looking to redeem themselves from their loss last week.  The Dragons suffered  their first loss of the season and Spartans loss a close game.  The Dragons started the game with four players which may explain why the game for both teams started off slow.  A little awkwardness, but the game quickly picked up as they reached the halfway point of the first quarter when the fifth player, Justin for the Dragons, showed up.  It was an exciting game from that point forward.  The Spartans got contribution from all of their players.  Drexel, Alonzo, Nav and Masoto kept the game in striking distance up until the last seconds of the game.  The Dragons team captain, Rob, and league leading scorer Joey, put in work to keep the game close with Daryll chipping in to close out the game for the Dragons sixth win of the season.

Dragons  58       Joey S. 20 prs, 3 rbds, 4 threes
Spartans 55         Alonzo R. 16 prs, 10 rbnds, 3 ast

Primetime vs Code Green
And now for the surprise game of the season... Code Green worked hard all week to prepare for this game against the incredible Primetime Franchise.  This was a classic "David vs Goliath" scenario.  Primetime showed no mercy despite there obvious advantage: speed, team work, and the 'Primetime Championship Experience".  Code Green played their butts off behind team captains Jason and AJ.  Primetime's Marlowe and Alex put the ax down early to establish the tempo for the whole game.  Code Green's Jason and AJ obliged and took the challenge head on to establish a lead in the second half of the game.  Primetime turned up the heat with their signature press but Code Green weathered the storm with Aaron, Kristian, Chris and Justin E. holding on to their jockstraps and making key plays down the stretch for  an amazing win.
Side Note:
Primetime's Alex Martin did leave after the first half of the game.

Code Green 62   AJ A. 17 pts, 5 rbd, 4 ast, 3 stl
Primetime 56       Marlowe B. 12 pts, 4 rbnds

Week 3 September 14, 2011 Asian 35+ Division News

Gee Wiz.....  These athletes definitely left their walking sticks at home.  Another great Wednesday night basketball.  Here is the Summary of the night:

Bula vs Legends
Both teams came into the game with an undefeated record.  Bula are a big and imposing team with great shooting and undeniable team chemistry.  Legends are a scrappy team with a high basketball IQ.  It was apparent from the start that Bula's size was going to be tough to cope with.  Sam Laporte and Lito Galang controlled the boards early and got several easy put back points to get Bula up early.  Legends was not going to go down without a fight.  Kobe and Dindo kept them in the game with incredible shots and plays.  Bula's bench put the game out of reach with Robert and Gus leading the charge.

Bula  52   Lito G. 10 pts and 5 rb
Legends 36  Kobe 15 pts and 3 threes

Nimisis vs NoyP-Forex
NoyP-Forex came into this game with a 2-0 record and looked confident going into this tough game against Nimisis.  Nimisis was looking for their first win of the season and came into the game prepared with a full roster.  The game started out fast.  Both teams came out firing on all cylinders.  Nimisis was lead by Rydell with relentless fearless drives to the basket and Mageed  complemented him with his sharp shooting and great plays to set up his teammates.  Mike V. had his typical great game but JR made it rain with 4 tree pointers and great plays down the stretch to keep the game from getting out of hand.  Eventually Nimisis pressure and teamwork got them over the hump for their first win of the season.  Congratulations Nimisis!

Nimisis  62   Rydell M. 19 pts, 3 ast, 2 stl and 6 rb
NoyP-Forex  48  JR 12 pts, 3 ast, 3 stl and 2 rb

Code Black vs Joyful Smiles
The last game of the evening came down to the last play of the game.  Both of these teams came in looking for their first win of the season.  It was a physical game and defense was clearly on display tonight.  Joyful Smiles was lead by Rich with his savvy scoring and play making with Victor and Kit chipping in with timely scoring and tough defense.  Code Black lacked speed tonight but Tony and Nik kept them in the game with Warren, Mark and Randy creating havoc on the floor.   The lead changed several times but Joyful Smiles made a last minute charge and kept the pressure on Code Black.  Code Black had a chance in the closing seconds to take the lead but missed the key free throws with seconds left.  Joyful Smiles got their first win of the season.  Congratulations!

Code Black  54  Nik S. 15 pts and 9 rb
Joyful Smile   55  Rich D. 23 pts and 3 rb

Outstanding Athlete of the Week (3)
It was an easy choice for us this week: Nimisis's Rydel M. 19 pts, 3 ast, 2 stl and 6 rb

Week 7 September 11, 2011 D League News

Elite vs Primetime
For starters this was one of the best match ups of the season.  It was due to be a contender for game of the week.  Elite is the savvy and athletic team vs Primetime the high IQ and speed that kills team.  The first quarter was bit of a feeling out process.  Elite picked up some new and exciting players this season, one in particular Joven B., a point guard that complements Nikole Bautista and Chris Del Rosario perfectly.  Primetime picked up Anthony G. a dream player to have on your team: athletic, high IQ, and can do everything on the court.  Elite started to pull away in the second quarter with John T. leading the way on easy buckets to the hoop and hitting his shots from the outside.  By the second half Elite started to build their lead in the double digits with great team work and passing.  Juan M. kept Primetime close with two three pointers and great drives to the hoop.  Collin S. and Marco C. came in to inject more speed and lock down defense.  The combination of the classic Primetime press and trap proved to be the factor for their comeback in the 4th quarter.  Elite started to unravel ever so slowly and succumbed to the Primetime pressure.  Alex M. and Anthony G. tandem put Primetime in the lead with a few minutes left on the clock.  An and 1 from Anthony G. put Primetime up for good and sealed the win for them.  This was an outstanding game that everyone can enjoy at  Up 2 Speed Sports Channel

Code Green vs SF Warriors
The young and the restless Code Green led by two fearless leaders in Jason R. and AJ A., won their first game of the season versus an incomplete Bula team, came into this game with some confidence but was missing their leading rebounders Chris S. and Justin E..  SF Warriors came into the game without a win but was hungry for their first win of the season.  The game started fast.  Jason R. started out well hitting most of his threes in the first half of the game.  JD (Jeffrey D) sped his way to the basket, slicing and dicing, doing whatever he wanted to his defender.  It was a close game until Steven F., Martin V. and Josh for the SF Warriors got hot and hit everything in sight.  AJ A. for Code Green did what he could to keep the game close but Aaron A. for Code Green fouled out and the SF Warriors was able to close out the game easily to get their first win of the season.  Congratulations SF Warriors!  Go to Up 2 Speed Sports Channel  to watch this game.

Spartans vs ATR
The two hottest teams in the league both coming into this game with a four game winning streak.  Spartans gave Primetime, one of the best teams in the D League, their first loss of the season in a thriller of a game.  ATR beat most of the teams they faced all season with controlling the boards, excellent defense, and outstanding ball movement on offense.  Their only lost coming from Primetime.  This season the Spartans retooled their team and added some outstanding players, Nav S., Alonzo R. and  Masoto H..  The game started out even with both teams trading tough baskets throughout the game.  It got physical as the game went into the fourth quarter.  Team Captain Drexel F. made some amazing plays for the Spartans but the true gem for them was Nav S.  which contributed timely points, assists and big steals in the remaining minutes of the game.  But in true ATR fashion the Lee Brothers, Jon and Will, took over the game.  Corey S. and Allen F. played off of each other well.  Jun G. sealed the game with his big double double 17 points and 10 rebounds.  This game was truly a game that you can watch over and over again.  Go to up Up 2 Speed Sports Channel to watch this incredible game.

Dragons vs Avengers
The Dragons came into this game as the only undefeated team in this tough D League Division but... in this game they did not have the one and two leading scorers in the D League Joey S. and Daryl C..  The Avengers had a four game losing streak coming into this game and was looking to fight tooth and nail to get back on the winning track.  Despite their short bench, the Dragons got off to a great start with Rob C. catching fire early.  Hervin M., Vince M. and Mike followed his lead with Xavier doing all the dirty work that kept the Dragons in control of the game in the first half with great ball movement and teamwork.  Gino V. by halftime rallied his team to capture the lead for good in the fourth quarter.  Chris M. lead the way for the streaking Avengers with 9 points and 7 rebounds.  Key performances from Gabe M., Paolo D. and Steven M. helped get the Avengers back on the winning track and give the Dragons their first loss of the season.  Go to Up 2 Speed Sports Channel to watch the Game of the Week.
